The LepiLED lamp was designed to facilitate the collection and study of nocturnal insects.
Most insects have highly sensitive vision in the ultraviolet, blue, and green spectrum. The LepiLED features eight high-performance LEDs from Nichia covering this range. Since nocturnal insects respond particularly well to ultraviolet light, four of the LEDs emit at 365 nm – a wavelength invisible to the human eye.
Since its release, the LepiLED has been tested under many conditions and is widely approved and appreciated by entomological experts.
The LepiLED is lightweight (410 g for the lamp only), compact, robust, and efficient, making it especially suitable for fieldwork in remote areas. It can easily be transported in backpacks and carried on airplanes.
The central heat sink is made of anodized aluminum. The lamp is dust- and waterproof (IP65/67). The 3 mm borosilicate glass is durable, scratch-resistant, and temperature-resistant.
Warning: the light is extremely intense and may cause glare. A pair of UV-protective glasses (EN 170 2C-1.2) is supplied, but caution is essential (keep out of reach of children). As UV radiation is invisible, it is recommended to stay more than 50 cm away and avoid direct exposure without protection.
The lamp operates on DC voltage between 5 and 13 V (UV mode: 5–9 V). A 2 m cable with USB connector is included, optimized for use with power banks (see kits). Lead-gel batteries (12 V) or others can be connected using the supplied adapter.
The LepiLED Maxi Switch has two modes: UV only or mixed spectrum. With the supplied 20 Ah power bank, runtime is approx. 4.5–5 hours in mixed mode and 9–9.5 hours in UV-only mode.
The most complete kit also includes a funnel trap with a 60 L zippered net and a carabiner. Made of polypropylene, it does not absorb UV radiation. The LepiLED is mounted inside the funnel, which is delivered assembled.
