The Wildlife Acoustics Power Kit is a combination of a solar panel and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, designed to power the SM3/SM3BAT, SM4/SM4BAT, and SM5/SM5BAT recorder families.

It includes mounting accessories and a power cable for your SM3/SM4/SM5 (recorder not included).

It is recommended to pre-charge the Power Kit using the included USB-A to USB-C cable before field deployment.

USB power supply not included.

The Power Kit provides multiple power outputs that can be used with other devices.

However, Wildlife Acoustics does not provide support for use with devices other than SM3/SM4.

If the Power Kit is placed in a shaded area, it will only collect a small amount of energy from reflected ambient light. It is primarily designed for direct sunlight exposure. If the Power Kit is never exposed to direct sunlight during deployment, it may not collect enough energy to maintain its internal battery while powering an SM3/SM4, depending on your schedule and settings.

For best results, position the Power Kit to receive as much direct sunlight as possible each day during deployment. In strong sunlight, the “sun” LED on the back of the unit turns red.

The duration a fully charged Power Kit can power a Song Meter depends on several factors:

  • Recorder model (SM5/SM5 BAT, SM4/SM4BAT, SM3/SM3BAT)
  • Recording settings and schedule
  • Bat activity levels (for ultrasonic models)
  • Average temperature
  • Daily sunlight exposure

In a worst-case scenario, where the Power Kit is fully charged beforehand but receives no light during deployment, it will function as a battery pack with a capacity of 92.5 Wh, approximately 25% more than four alkaline D batteries.
