The ThermaData ETI temperature data logger with 1 m external probe is a compact and robust device designed for precise temperature monitoring in natural environments, including hard-to-reach measurement points. Fully waterproof (IP66/67), it can be deployed in the field in environments exposed to humidity, water splashes, or dust without requiring heavy protection. Its 1 m probe enables temperature measurement in substrate, water, rock crevices, deep cavities, or semi-confined structures. It automatically records measurement series at regular intervals with a large memory capacity of up to 120,000 readings. Its multiple logging function allows several recording sessions without intermediate data download, making it ideal for discontinuous or seasonal monitoring. Data retrieval and configuration are easily carried out via USB-C connection using the free ThermaData Hub software.
In naturalist monitoring protocols, temperature is a key microclimatic parameter. It directly influences biological activity, development cycles, reproduction, and survival of many species, especially ectothermic organisms. Thermal monitoring enables fine-scale analysis of habitat conditions, including cavity thermal inertia, vegetation buffering effects, solar exposure, soil or water temperature, and variability between micro-sites. These data are essential for interpreting ecological dynamics, comparing sampling plots, assessing habitat quality, and documenting local-scale impacts of climate change.
This model with a 1 m external probe is particularly suited for measuring temperature in specific environments or materials: forest soils, substrates, leaf litter, temporary ponds, wetland waters, rock fissures, deep cavities, or artificial structures. Thanks to its high waterproof rating, the main unit can be used outdoors over long periods, even under variable weather conditions. It is suitable for monitoring campaigns ranging from a few weeks to several months, with battery life exceeding one year depending on settings. For ambient air temperature measurements in standard habitats, the internal sensor version may be preferred.
