SonoChiro (English version)

Authors :
Editor :

An automatic identification of European bat recordings in Europe.

BIOTOPE has developed an efficient software for automatic processing of bat calls: Sonochiro®.
This software provides a valuable help for all users of ultrasonic bat detectors, particularly in the case of automatic recorders, accumulating large amounts of data. Its various features make it useful in different contexts of analysis: species identification, bat pass counting, feeding buzz quantification, social activity highlighting, etc.

SonoChiro® cannot completely substitute for a manual identification since a zero error analysis is unattainable in the current state of knowledge and technological advances. However, Sonochiro was constructed to facilitate the treatment of its own mistakes, especially through a set of relevant confidence indices.
Thus, the time saved through the use of SonoChiro® is considerable. This varies depending on many factors (purpose, recording quality, etc.) but it is generally greater than 90%, it even exceeds 99% in many cases.

SonoChiro is provided on an annual subscription basis, including all updates.

Acknowledgements

We first wish to thank our colleagues from the Bat’s pole of expertise of Biotope, with whom we had fruitful constructive dialogue during many stages of development and tests of SonoChiro.

We also definitely want to thank very much:

• Jean-François Julien (CNRS/MNHN) for his valuable advices providing guidance during the beginning of the project at Biotope Research and Development, and

• Michel Barataud (SFEPM) for the titanic job he has done on acoustic identification of the European bats, from which SonoChiro has indirectly but largely benefited.
