Trees shape our landscapes, structure our ecosystems and mark the passing of the seasons. Forests cover nearly half of the country, and certain species play an essential economic role. Riparian forests also reinforce riverbanks, while hedgerows structure agricultural landscapes and, with age, become rich and diverse ecosystems.

These silent giants live in close symbiosis with fungi, which are essential partners for their vitality and growth. They beautify and refresh our towns and villages, where many ornamental species have been acclimatised, some of which are spreading into natural environments.

Today, as the effects of climate change are increasingly being felt, a thorough knowledge of trees and their ecological requirements is essential. By learning to recognise the trees you encounter on a walk, you will also create a personal connection with nature, enrich your family outings, your mushroom picking or observation activities, and spark the curiosity of young and old alike.
