Breathtaking images! In the great Alpine lakes, springs and resurgences, as well as the oxbow lakes of the Rhône, beneath the ice and at altitudes of up to 2,600 metres, discover what lies beneath the surface. This magnificent flagship book set in the land of water lilies is also a veritable masterclass in the ecology of high-altitude lakes, masterfully put into words by the author, a professor of ‘Life and Earth Sciences’.

Rémi Masson has set out to explore the freshwater habitats of his native region, using photography to reveal their hidden beauty. By choice, he dives exclusively as a free diver. His photographs, which appear regularly in the national and international press, have also won several awards, the most recent being at the prestigious “GDT European Wildlife Photographer of the Year” competition in 2012. His dives in often little-explored environments also provide an opportunity to learn more about the behaviour of certain freshwater fish. In collaboration with researcher Frédéric Santoul from the University of Toulouse, he is behind the first scientific study on the phenomenon of catfish gatherings in the River Rhône.
