The Hérault department is rich in geological diversity, with outcrops dating back to the Precambrian era, 600 million years ago. Travelling through the department, you can travel through time and discover fossil sites on the seabed, including tropical coral reefs, dinosaur footprints, the landscapes of Salagou, the volcanoes of Escandorgue and Agde, and more.
A geologist and palaeontologist, Jean-Yves Crochet was a lecturer at the University of Montpellier. He has taken part in the creation of Voluntary Nature Reserves to preserve our geological heritage. To this end, in 1992 he set up the ASPROGEO Association (Association pour la Protection et la Valorisation du Patrimoine Géologique du Grand Sud-Ouest) and headed the Commission Régionale du Patrimoine Géologique (Regional Commission for Geological Heritage), responsible for drawing up an inventory of this heritage in Languedoc-Roussillon.
