For the first time in French since the 1960s, a guide provides bird ringers and all ornithologists likely to handle birds by hand with essential information on the identification of species and subspecies, measurements, moulting, sex and age. The 305 species (155 non-passerines and 150 passerines) most commonly captured in France and Belgium by generalist ringers are presented in detail.
To avoid confusion, their identification is directly compared with that of similar-looking species, numbering over 550. In addition to the author’s own observations, this bird identification guide is a compilation of a vast body of literature that is scattered and often difficult for most French bird ringers to access. It represents much more than a simple adaptation or update of English-language guides serving the same purpose and published over 20 years ago. These remain necessary, however, for species not covered in this guide. The consistent treatment of all species groups avoids the pitfall of having to use works of differing design.
