This dual-capsule module, available in mono or stereo versions, represents the most advanced model for listening to distant bird vocalizations. Equipped with EM272 Z1 capsules and featuring a ready-to-use 3.5 mm jack output, it perfectly meets the demands of field recordings.

Mono Microphone with Two Capsules

By connecting two identical capsules in parallel on a single channel, the audio signal is boosted by approximately +6 dB. The self-noise, however, only increases by 3 dB, resulting in a significant improvement of about 3 dB in the signal-to-noise ratio. This configuration enhances overall sensitivity, allowing more effective capture of faint flight calls, a major advantage for acoustic monitoring of nocturnal migration. As the capsules are placed very close together, phase issues are minimized, ensuring clear and coherent recording.

Stereo Microphone with Four Capsules

This setup combines two pairs of dual capsules in a stereo configuration, providing both the sensitivity gain of each pair and spatial sound reproduction. This spatialization not only improves vocalization detection with a better signal-to-noise ratio but also helps identify the direction of the calls, offering a deeper understanding of the dynamics of migratory flight. The result is a rich, immersive, and precise recording, ideal for advanced studies of the nocturnal acoustic environment.

User Feedback

  • Capsules wired in parallel significantly improve overall signal-to-noise ratio: combined signals increase by about +6 dB, while incoherent noise only rises by 3 dB, yielding a net 3 dB sensitivity gain.
  • For optimal performance, capsules should be placed as close as possible, even touching, with the sound source equidistant to each to minimize phase issues and comb filtering.
  • Two capsules in parallel draw more power than a single one, which can increase the load on your recorder and potentially reduce supply voltage. However, this rarely poses problems with most recording devices.

Applications

  • Nature and wildlife sound recording
  • Environmental and ambient sound capture
  • Recommended capsule for the “Vol de nuit” protocol tracking nocturnal bird migration (nocmig)
  • DIY microphones, stereo and binaural configurations
  • Use with portable recorders (Zoom, Tascam, Sony, etc.) via plug-in power
