The ThermaPod USB data logger is a standalone thermometer for automatic ambient temperature monitoring, requiring no software, with direct computer export and automatic PDF report generation. It can store up to 7,500 readings, with a resolution of 0.1 °C and an accuracy of ±0.5 °C between –10 and 70 °C (otherwise ±1 °C). The sampling interval is adjustable from 6 seconds to 255 minutes, and the CR2032 battery provides up to 10,000 hours of autonomy. Its IP65 rating ensures resistance to splashes, water, and dust, making it suitable for field use and transport.
In protocols for monitoring natural habitats and wildlife, temperature is a key microclimate indicator. It is used to describe habitat thermal stability, explain roost occupancy, interpret phenology (flowering, hatching, reproduction dates), and link species presence or activity to comparable environmental conditions across a network of plots. It also helps track long-term trends (climate monitoring), assess thermal stress, aridification, evaporation, and wetland drying, and validate habitat management measures (nest boxes, roosts, work in heritage buildings). These data are particularly valuable for studying bats (hibernation sites, cavities, attics, bell towers), breeding birds (temperature–insects–breeding success relationships), amphibians, and stenothermal species in aquatic or subterranean environments.
The ThermaPod is particularly suited for monitoring local microclimates (roosts, nest boxes, attics, bell towers, caves, cavities) and for protocols lasting from a few weeks to a few months (e.g., a 5–15 min interval over several weeks yields several thousand records). It is less suitable for very long-term monitoring (several years) at high frequency or for prolonged exposure to very wet environments (submersion). For comparative plot networks, it performs well when multiple units are deployed simultaneously with identical intervals, enabling standardized environmental comparisons and robust monitoring indicators.
