The Aude lies at the convergence of four major geological domains: the Massif Central, the Pyrenees, the Aquitaine Basin and the Languedoc. This region, considered to be "France in miniature", has had a rich geological history spanning 600 million years, from the Cambrian in the Montagne Noire to the Holocene of the coastal ranges. This history is marked by three major events: the formation of the Hercynian chain, the Pyrenees and the opening of the Mediterranean. The remarkable and varied landscapes of the Aude are constantly changing, reflecting the dynamic nature of the Earth.
