This guide features 11 geological walking routes at outstanding sites in the Bouches-du-Rhône department.
Discovering nature is never so immediate, never so attractive, as when you discover it on foot.
This new edition includes a new itinerary and a number of updates. The eleven walking itineraries in this guide offer an opportunity to discover a département whose landscapes - and what landscapes they are! those that inspired Van Gogh, Cézanne and even Picasso - are similar to those of Greece, the Dalmatian coast and parts of Italy.
This similarity is due to a backbone of relatively hard, white limestone. There are also red soils and rocks, evidence of a much warmer, wetter climate in the past. Last but not least, a former volcano can be found in the vineyards. The département boasts a wealth of natural resources. This is reflected in the number of protection and management structures: the Calanques National Park, Reserves and Regional Nature Parks. Set off to discover these massifs under a sky that is most often a rare shade of blue.
