The Meise Botanic Garden has been publishing the official flora of Belgium and neighbouring regions for 50 years. With each new edition, great attention is paid to changes in distribution, naming and classification, as well as to new plant species that have recently become established. As a result, this reference work remains the most accurate and comprehensive for our region. This edition also features a completely new look, hundreds of new illustrations and easy-to-use identification keys to help you name the species. Belgium has a long floral tradition.
It all began in 1860 with François Crépin's Manuel de la flore de Belgique. After 5 editions and numerous reprints, this flora was followed in 1934 by the Nouveau manuel de la flore de Belgique et des régions limitrophes by Jules Goffart and in 1967, on the initiative of William Mullenders, by the Flore de la Belgique, du Nord de la France et des Régions voisines. This blue-coated flora was soon nicknamed ‘the blue flora’. Like the later reprints of the Manual and the New Manual, it was published by Desoer of Liège. A considerably revised version followed in 1973. This Nouvelle flore de la Belgique, du Grand-Duché de Luxembourg, du Nord de la France et des régions voisines (pteridophytes and spermatophytes), with Joseph-Edgar De Langhe as its first author, mentions what was then the National Botanic Garden of Belgium as its publisher for the first time.
